Link is able to buy and customize his own home in Tears of the Kingdom. Here's how players can buy a house and build it.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild finally gave Link an opportunity to be his own homeowner. This residence gave players a place to store powerful weapons and shields for later, while simultaneously giving them a spot to sleep and cook food. In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, players can revisit this residence, but it doesn't offer any of the original amenities. Thankfully, players are able to build a new home for Link, and this time it's a much more involved process.

To purchase a house, players must first make their way through a side quest and collect the seed money necessary to start the process. Here's an in-depth look at how to buy and build a home in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

If players want to build a house, they'll first need to go to Tarrey Town in Northeastern Hyrule (by Akkala Highlands) and speak to Hudson and Rhondson. In this installment, the two have a child, Mattison, and are currently concerned about her leaving home and returning to Gerudo Town. Hudson seems particularly torn up about the prospect of his daughter's pilgrimage and asks Link if he would spend time with her. This starts the Mattison’s Independence Side Quest.

From there, players will want to track down Mattison (who can be seen walking around town or in her room, upstairs from where Rhondson and Hudson are talking). Talking to the girl will begin the small questline, where players must follow her around town. She will first head to two residents near the Tarry Town fountain and ask them if they know the Gerudo word for Grandma. The correct answer is Vaba. From there, Mattison will want to go visit Hudson at the work site below town, but she struggles to get past the "guard" that is demanding money to ride the nearby tram.

Players are tasked with covering the eyes of the "guard." There is a nearby plank of wood that can be used, but players can also enter a small cave in the side out of the mountain (behind Rhondson and down the cliff a bit) to Ascend up into a storeroom and open a door where Rhondson will then reward them with Hudson Cutouts that can be easily stood in front of the "guard." Once his eyes are covered up, players can talk to Mattison and let her know she can run by.

The last step is to meet Mattison down near Hudson, who is standing next to a Hot Air Balloon (directly across from the Tram). Hudson wants to paint the balloon and asks for ten Sundelions. Players may already have these in their inventory and can simply speak to Hudson again. There are Sundelions littered around the worksite for those that need more. Once players hand over the Sundelions, they'll watch a small cutscene and finish the side quest.

After the side quest is wrapped up, players can speak to Rhondson who will then offer them a special package to buy a house and two rooms for 1500 Rupees.

Once players have purchased the initial house package from Rhondson in Tarrey Town, she will send a representative to a plot of land just outside town (it's sitting to the left on a cliffside if Link is looking at the bridge leading to town). It's right next to the Rasitakiwak Shrine. To begin building, players need to head over to the representative and speak to him, which will prompt the building mini-game. Here, players can use the Ultrahand to drag around small rooms and attach them to one another. Once they've attached the two rooms, they can speak to the representative, who will do a small inspection and then call Rhondson over.

Once Rhondson completes her final inspection, players will be given access to the full swath of building options and can let their imaginations run wild.

Once players unlock the full housing experience, they can return to the representative at any time and start the building mini-game again. While walking around in the sectioned-off area, if players talk to the representative again he will give them the option to purchase new rooms. There are many room options available, with some serving as building blocks to connect room sections, and others providing amenities and utility. Players will be able to add their own Kitchen, Shield and Sword stands, paddock for a horse, and more.

Players will notice a rope net stretched across certain openings when attempting to place a room. This net will not be there when the home is inspected and put together, but it signifies where an opening may be. Even if the house is put together correctly, any sides with netting will simply be "open" and will not feature a closed wall. Players will want to make sure they don't have any exposed netting when having their homes inspected, or they will simply see open space to the outside.

There are many different connecting rooms that will allow players to create unique house shapes. It's also possible to build upward, with options for interior and exterior stairs. Players have a lot of freedom when building their residence, so long as they have Rupees to afford the rooms.
